Free Wi-Fi in public spaces in Coolangatta
The City’s free public Wi-Fi “spine” is complete with the Coolangatta precinct now connected. Coolangatta was switched on recently.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said Council had invested in installing one of the world’s fastest fibre optic systems, with plans to broaden the city economy.
The fibre optic cable runs from Helensvale to Coolangatta, following the light rail route and then underneath the Gold Coast Highway to Coolangatta. Various precincts along the route, such as Southport, Surfers, Broadbeach and Coolangatta, now off free Wi-Fi in public spaces. Council plans leasing out the remaining data capacity on the network, bringing in revenue for the City and attracting more businesses in industries such as film, digital editing, health and knowledge and medical research.
Tip: If you are using public Wi-Fi with a Windows 10 laptop it's a very good idea to Turn Off File Sharing.
This will prevent other users having access to your important files.
How to turn off file sharing:
- Go to the Control Panel.
- Select Network and Internet > Network Sharing Center > Change Advanced Sharing Settings.
- Turn off the options for network discovery, file and print sharing, and public folder sharing for public networks.
- Click Save Changes.
